A volcanic bowl with most of the big animals in it
Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, with a floor of about 260 km² enclosed by walls roughly 600 m high. Within it live lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and one of Tanzania’s few reliable populations of black rhino, which makes it the best single-day game drive in the country.

Nothing is guaranteed, but your guide knows where to look and when.
Wildlife is good in all months because the crater holds resident animals. The dry season (June to October) offers the easiest driving and clearest views; the green season (November to May) is quieter, with lush scenery and newborn animals. Crater mornings can be cool and misty at any time of year, so bring a warm layer.
